Welcome to Meeting of Minds 6
Well-being is not a matter of course.
We just take it for granted.
We know that challenges in our lives are ahead. We also know how to avoid some of them. But some people do not have the same abilities to navigate in a complex world of possibilities and expectations. They have to be guided. And that is where we – we as in researchers, we as in professionals, and we as in social workers – come in.
Luckily many diagnosed people, whether it might be children or adults, have a great life. Not at least because of caring families. Life is assumed to be much easier being a worriless child when parents are around to take care of you. But what happens when you become older and parents inevitable cannot be there for you any more and you have to take care of yourself?
These people have different abilities and some of them can take more control of their own lives than others. The latter often lack the ability of distinguishing right from wrong and they need help to choose the right and expected path. This goes for most things in life: legally, socially, and in work, school, or studies – and of course in common daily life.
But how come that we question this issue? We could shrug, lean back, and fold our arms saying that we cannot fight it. But we do not. That is not why we are in this business. We are here because we care. This is the reason why we try to make the daily life better for both people with diagnoses and for their relatives.
With focus on well-being we hope to question if we are heading in the right direction and, if not, what can be done to get in that right direction. And we hope to learn from each other. To be able to make well-being for people with autism even better than it might already be.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the Meeting of Minds 5 conference.
